An Overview of Liugong Island Scenic Spot
Liugong Island is located in Weihai Bay, the easternmost part of Shandong Peninsula, 2.1 sea miles away from the urban area of Weihai. It covers an area of 3.15 square kilometers. Liugong Island is endowed with splendid scenery and 87 percent of the forest cover, which is known as “a divine mountain in the sea” and “a retreat away from the world”. Besides, it boasts many historic and cultural sites, including the Warring States relics dating back thousands of years, the Sino-Japanese War relics such as the Praefect Department of Northern Navy, the Naval School and the Ancient Forts in the Qing Dynasty, as well as many European-style buildings built during the British Lease of Weihaiwei Period, which is known as “the eastern fence” and “the unsinkable warship”. As the birthplace of Northern Navy, the decisive battlefield of the Sino-Japanese War and the military place leased by Britain for nearly half a century, Liugong Island witnessed the Chinese failure of self-improvement and the Chinese endeavor to catch up with the world and bears the deepest national spirit and the most persistent pursuit of national revival of the Chinese people.
