Liugong Island Expo Park
Liugong Island Expo Park covers an area of 50,000 square meters and is divided into six exhibition areas and nineteen exhibition halls. It adopts a combination of high-tech and traditional craft, to give a comprehensive and three-dimensional telling of the three themes of Liugong Island, including the Liugong Culture, the Sino-Japanese War and the History during the British Lease. The Expo Park is referred to as an encyclopedia to interpret Liugong Island. In the Aqua-Sanctuary, there is a mural. The mural is made of thousands of kinds of fine natural colored jade weighing more than 30 tons, and carefully crafted by famous Jiangnan jade-carving artists. The colorful mural vividly tells the legendary experience of Liu Min, Crown Prince of the Han Dynasty, who drifted to Liugong Island after undergoing plentiful innumerable hardships. The story focuses on Liu Min’s deeds of helping the destressed and succoring those in peril and his chivalrous conducts on the island. The Wanghai Tower, originally built in the Tang Dynasty, was built by the Cishi (Prefectural Governors) of Dengzhou to welcome Wu Zetian during her East Patrol. It was famous for its time and was destroyed in the war. The rebuilt Wanghai Tower, about nine-feet high, is the highest point of the Expo Park. The tower is divided into Chunfu Hall, Xialu Hall, Qiushou Hall and Dongying Hall, each on a total of four floors. It houses masterpieces from more than 20 top craft artists in China, just like a “treasure of art”. The Chinese Temple of Sea, built to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Sino-Japanese War, is on equal terms with the Temple of Heaven and the Temple of Earth, and is the only temple for ocean worship. In the Temple stands tall an iron rod which is 16.8 meters high and lies a magnificent ancient tripod. There are also fifty-six dragons crouching the temple. The overall structure gives people a feeling of grandness. The History Museum on the British Lease of Weihaiwei, with an exhibition area of 1,290 square meters, gives a real show of the humiliate history, during which Weihaiwei as one of the “seven sons” was occupied by the British for 32 years and Liugong Island for 42 years, by the advanced means such as scene restoration, videos and wax statues, sculptures. The whale Museum, with a total floorage of 1,600 square meters, stores the specimens of the skin, bones and vital organs of the world’s largest sperm whale (about 19.6 meters long and 50.1 tons weight) on land. By simulating the marine ecological environment, the museum also presents vividly and comprehensively the knowledge of sperm whale and related whales, taking the display of the specimens as the main method and using high-tech means such as pictures, exhibition boards and multimedia show. It is one of the largest and most characteristic cetacean science education bases in China.
